An appliance that helps reduce the waste generated by a household, is made of recycled materials, and is itself designed to be 100% recyclable was one of the three finalists in the first-ever Green House Awards. The NatureMillPro indoor home composter (pictured) is energy-efficient, costing 50 cents/month to operate. The Green House Awards is part of the Housewares Design Awards. In addition to Green House Awards, finalists were chosen in 13 awards categories, which include electric housewares appliances and non-appliance products such as cutlery and bakeware. A panel of design and merchandising experts, assembled by the International Housewares Association (IHA), chose finalists based on design believed to differentiate a product with unique appearance and/or function. The judges considered aesthetics, innovative materials and technology, user benefits, and market response. Products were required to be on the market; prototypes were not accepted.
