Makita’s (La Mirada, CA, U.S.) MakStar Charger for its lithium-ion power tool batteries brings intelligence to the charging process for optimizing the life of the power cells. A CPU in the charger identifies each battery and its history, then analyzes the battery’s condition—including determining whether the battery suffered from overcharging, high heat, or cycle-aging. The unit then controls the current, voltage, and heat during charging in order to help keep the battery in prime condition. A fan in the charger helps cool the battery during and after charging. The charger is designed for use on all 14.4-V batteries and 18-V batteries used in Makita tools, such as the model BJV180Z cordless jigsaw.
