A new-generation copolyester combines the clarity, toughness, and chemical resistance of traditional copolyesters with higher heat resistance, improved design flexibility, and ease of processing. Suited for producing plastic parts in appliances usually made of polycarbonate, Tritan copolyester offers maximized durability for blender carafes, food processors, and food choppers, as well as for the harsh dishwasher environment, which exposes parts to high heat and moisture levels and a broad array of foodstuffs, detergents, and sanitizers. The new material can yield parts with lower levels of residual stress than polycarbonate, providing designers with more freedom to create complex appliance aesthetics. Because of the potential for reduced residual stress, as well as the material’s good chemical resistance and hydrolytic stability, annealing procedures can be eliminated, creating the potential for increased production speeds and less energy use. Tritan also has a density 2% lower than polycarbonate, which translates into more parts per kilogram. The advanced polymer does not contain bisphenol-A, an additional merit that propelled health-conscious blending equipment manufacturer Vita-Mix Corp. to select Tritan for its new flagship blender Vita-Mix 5200, which was launched in late 2007.
