A line of leakage current detection interrupter (LCDI) devices has been designed for room air-conditioners. The new LCDI cord sets comply with UL’s 484 listing requirements, which specifies that single-phase portable room air-conditioners manufactured after Aug. 1, 2004 contain either a factory-installed LCDI or AFCI protection device to reduce the risk of an arc fault occurring in the air-conditioner’s power cord. Available in 15- and 20-A, 125- and 250-V ratings, and 30-A, 250-V ratings, the LCDI cord sets are said to provide a reliable and economical way to prevent the risk of fire due to a damaged power cord. The devices are suitable on window/sleeve, windowless, spot cooler, and PTAC models. They feature electronic detection technology to automatically cut off power to the unit when a current leakage condition is detected in the unit’s power cord. Once power is shut-off, the device will not be able to be reset until the unsafe current leakage situation is resolved.
