Royal Philips Electronics teamed up with Procter & Gamble to produce the IntelliClean power toothbrush system, which combines an integrated Crest liquid toothpaste dispensing system and Sonicare® cleaning technology.

In the making for 4-1/2 years, the toothpaste cartridge is placed inside the toothbrush handle. When pressed, a button dispenses the toothpaste directly onto the brush head by traveling up and through the inside of the toothbrush onto the bristles. The toothbrush also features a Smartimer® that automatically shuts the system off to ensure users brush for the full, recommended time of 2 min.

In addition, the toothbrush features a Quadpacer®, which signals users with an audible tone and slight pause to move the brush to another quadrant of the mouth after 30 sec elapses. According to Jim Judge, senior vice president and general manager of Sales and Service for Philips Domestic Appliances and Personal Care, this is to ensure complete cleaning. “If you’re left-handed, you’ll spend most of the time on the right side [of your mouth], or if you’re right-handed, you’ll spend most of the time on the left side—it’s human nature,” he tells APPLIANCE. “This reminds you every 30 sec to change quadrants of your mouth.”

The IntelliClean system is available in two models, with one offering a programmable Quadpacer and a dual-speed control with high and low settings for sensitive areas or to massage gums.
