The company says it has developed a prototype of a 40-Gbit/sec optical packet switch using compound semiconductors and electronic circuit technology, set for production in 2005. Comprising an optical switching device that switches signals without temporarily converting them into electric signals, an optoelectronic integrated circuit controls the optical switch based on destination information carried by the optical packet signals. The device is said to work as fast as 2 nsec and was completed 10 years earlier than anticipated, according to the company, to further the optical communications market.
