The new Insulfrax Thermal Insulation 1800 Blanket from Unifrax Corporation is said to not only provide thermal insulation at operating temperatures up to 1,832°F, but is safer and healthier than alternative products.
The Insulfrax fiber chemistry has been combined with the company’s proprietary fiber spinning technology to create a specialty high-temperature fiber that reportedly has superior thermal and mechanical properties when compared to other fiberglass blankets. The product’s main application is insulation of self-cleaning ovens.
The company’s fiberglass blanket has no binders (binders typically contain outgassing byproducts) and was developed from a calcium/magnesium/silicate chemistry to produce a strong, lightweight, needled blanket that is said to have high-tensile strength and excellent resistance to thermal shock.
The production of the insulation involves melting the material and depositing it on a series of rapidly rotating wheels. Through the use of this proprietary spinning process, specific fiber properties such as diameter and length—which maximize the tensile strength of the material—can be achieved.
There are also said to be significant safety factors associated with using the fiberglass blanket. The company says Insulfrax is able to operate at continuous temperatures of more than 1,800°F, which is significantly above self-cleaning oven temperatures, proving cooking appliance OEMs with a high degree of safety. The blanket also has flame-spread and smoke-developed ratings of zero.
Another safety feature is that the insulation’s chemistry was specifically designed to be a high-temperature fiber blanket that was more soluble and meets European regulatory requirements (Directive 97/69/EC). A new classification of fibers called bio-soluble fibers—what Insulfrax is composed of—are designed to dissolve in lungs, should they be inhaled. This is important because the more soluble the fiber, the better it is for a user’s health and safety.
Additionally, the blanket can insulate the oven and pass the appropriate UL/CSA requirements with a thinner piece of insulation compared to most fiberglass insulation. This allows the oven manufacturer to have a larger inner oven capacity.
