As the appliance industry continues to evaluate new materials for selective appliance applications, one tried-and-true solution seems to be getting more attention than anyone might have expected.

Many of the experimental materials that were on the tip of the industry’s collective tongue have created increasingly complicated manufacturing and recycling concerns for manufacturers.

Meanwhile, a surprising and time-tested favorite with both manufacturers and consumers— steel—is re-emerging with some remarkable new capabilities as a “preferred choice” for many savvy and environmentally conscious design engineers.

Among several options for appliance designers and manufacturers are the new lighter weight and stronger steels, including Ultra High Strength Steels (UHSS) and Advanced High Strength Steels (AHSS) available from Ispat Inland Inc. Like other steels, these new choices are readily and inexpensively recyclable, easy to work with in manufacturing and a consumer favorite for their extended service life. In Europe and other major markets where environmental concerns actually drive material choices via legislative requirements, these specialized steels have become increasingly popular.

Ispat Inland is a major supplier of high-quality flat-rolled steel products to the appliance industry. This includes nickel-flash, cold-rolled sheet for greatly enhanced paint performance, hot-dipped galvanized, galvanneal, Electrogalvanized, and Zn-Ni plated for use in corrosion prone applications and aluminized sheet for high-temperature applications.

Ispat Inland also produces the most complete line of AHSS and UHSS in the world, including products with tensile strengths up to 1,500 MPa.

Ispat Inland is a subsidiary of Ispat International N.V. and a member of the LNM Group. The LNM Group is the world’s second-largest and the only truly global steel company. Its annual global sales are in excess of U.S. $15 billion, and annual production exceeds 42 million tons.
