The water passing through the magnetic device improves the performance of the washing machine and water heater, and the improvement is more perceivable when water hardness is more than 7°eH or 100 ppm. In case of a washing machine, the distinct advantages are higher rinsing efficiency (which means less traces of detergent in clothes), reduced scaling on the tub and heating element, better wash quality, no blockage of water flow in the magnetic valve, and less breakage of bearing due to no deposition of salts surrounding the rubber sealing rings. In a nutshell—less service calls. In the case of water heaters, there is less scaling on the heating element and, thus, quicker heating and saving of energy.
There are many opinions on the theory of magnetic water treatment, but so far the tested and accepted hypothesis is that magnetic poles of water molecules are activated from the magnetic field of the device, resulting in attraction and collision between positive calcium ions and negative carbonate ions. This, in turn, promotes nucleation of Argonite crystals, which have higher density and are less prone to form hard scales. As the crystals are much finer, a larger number of crystals are formed (when compared to number of crystals in non-treated water). As per the results from electron microscopy, the ratio of Argonite/Calcite is increased in magnetically treated water.

Practical tests by some washing machine makers have so far confirmed the unique benefits from such crystallization and physical change of water structure from the influence of magnetic field, such as better wetting power of water; higher rinsing efficiency, thus less traces of detergent in clothes; no blockage of water flow in magnetic valve; much less salt deposition around the rubber sealing on the bearing, thus less break down of bearing; and less scale on the tub and heating element.
It is very important that water-flow rate of the washing machine and the heater is considered while selecting the type of the device. The plumb-in type of Water Energizer (as shown in the picture) has two models of 300 L and 600 L per hr respectively. The model Hydroion is a clamp-on type and is specified in terms of pipe diameter ranging from 1/2 to 2 in. In the case of higher water hardness, a device with relatively higher flow rate capacity should be selected.
