Prices of Plasma, LCD TVs to Drop Further in Malaysia

Prices of plasma and LCD TVs in the country are expected to drop by another 20 percent this year in view of stiff competition.

Panasonic Malaysia Sdn Bhd Managing Director Hiroshi Nakamura said the price drop would push up sales of both TV types in the market.

“"Last year, the price went down 30 percent and manufacturers do not have much choice but to reduce it further this year," he said.

Nakamura said presently, demand for both TV types for household use in the country was still low, while demand in the commercial sector was picking up.

He said the number of plasma and LCD TVs in commercial areas such as shopping complexes, offices and airports had increased in recent years.

Demand from home users was likely to rise but would not be significant, as the price was still beyond the reach of most Malaysians, he added.

"More brands of plasma and LCD TVs are also likely to enter the market, thus giving consumers more choices," he said, adding that the company had sold 1,500 Panasonic plasma and LCD TVs in Malaysia with equal demand for both types.

Nakamura said the difference between a plasma and LCD TV was normally in the screen size--the former is more than 42 inches while the latter is usually between 14 inches and 32 inches.

He said demand for flat-screen conventional TV was also rising as the price was dropping. (Malaysia Star)
