Sharp to Launch New LCD in Korean Market

Japan's Sharp Corp. plans to launch sales of the world's largest high-definition LCD TV in the Korean market in February, further intensifying competition in the country, industry sources said.

Sharp's Aquos model features a 65-inch LCD screen and a four-wavelength back lighting system to enhance color reproduction.

Sharp plans to dig deeper into the Korean market by introducing a range of new products such as air purifiers and electronic dictionaries, the sources said. In addition, Sharp products have gone on sale at three outlets of the nation's second-largest discount chain, Samsung Tesco Homeplus, the sources said.

Sony Corp. also started selling its new Bravia line of high-definition LCD televisions in Korea last month. Bravia sets have been a hit in the U.S., accounting for 35 percent of the U.S. LCD television market as of mid-November, according to Sony Korea.

Chinese home appliances manufacturer Haier Group Co. also recently launched a line of LCD sets in Korea.

In response, Korea's global players, primarily Samsung Electronics Co. and LG Electronics Inc., as well as smaller LCD TV manufacturers, are expected to step up their efforts to gain a larger share in the local market. (JoongAng Daily)
