Japan April Consumer Electronics Shipments Up

Domestic shipments of consumer electronic products in April rose 8.7 percent from a year earlier to 187.1 billion yen (approx. U.S. $1.7 billion), the 17th straight month of increase, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA) said.

The rise follows a 10.4 percent jump in March and 17.7 percent growth in February. In April, liquid crystal display (LCD) TV set shipments surged 85 percent year-on-year to 320,000 sets. Shipments of LCD TVs have been rising year-on-year from 1999 through 2004.

Plasma display panel TV shipments rose 67.2 percent to 35,000 units in April, the 22nd rise in 23 months. Shipments of conventional cathode-ray tube TVs dropped 19.8 percent to 384,000, the 35th straight month of decline. Combined shipments of DVD players and DVD recorders rose 1 percent from a year earlier to 455,000 units in April, the 76th month of increase. (Yahoo Finance, AFX)
