Home appliances maker Whirlpool of India launched its new range of refrigerators and air-conditioners and said it was aiming to become the number-one player in refrigerators and washing machines in India in the coming years.

The company has also set a target to be among the top three players in the air-conditioner market in India by the end of 2005, said Arvind Uppal, managing director of Whirlpool of India.

He said the company's all India market share in refrigerators and air-conditioners had grown in the last 4 months by about 4 percentage points. While the market share in refrigerators grew from 19.8 percent to 23.1 percent, in the washing machines, Whirlpool's share rose to 15.5 percent from 12.7 percent, Mr. Uppal said.

In the air-conditioner segment, Whirlpool says it is currently at number six in terms of market share. The target was to become the second biggest player in the next 2 to 3 years. "The immediate target was to become the top three by the end of this year," Mr. Uppal confirmed.

Mr. Uppal said Genius, Whirlpool India's new refrigerator, it has a capacity of 180 L and is a "superior product having a unique ability that balances both bottle cooling and ice making time." The new window air-conditioner -- 6th Sense Magicool range --has a program that automatically sets the desired operational mode based on internal room conditions, he said. (Sify)
