Talks are progressing over Maytag Corp.'s "tentative plan" to slash as many as 378 jobs at North Canton's Hoover plant in Ohio, U.S.
Maytag officials were in North Canton this week and may return next week to meet with the union, said Jim Repace, president of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers Local 1985.
So far, the talks have been "very productive," Mr. Repace said. They've focused on why financially challenged Maytag must make more cuts and why financially challenged union members can't afford it. The sides understand each other now, he said.
The union wants to help Maytag, he said, but it won't reopen its contract. (The Beacon Journal)
