Japan's Toshiba Corp. and Chinese-based TCL International Holdings Ltd. marked their first step toward joint production of household appliances by laying the foundation for a manufacturing base in southern China.

The production site in Foshan in Guangdong Province will cover an area of 150,000 sq m, and is expected to acquire a capacity of 1.5 million washing machines and 2 million refrigerators per year in the next 3 to 5 years, Xinhua news agency reported.

The establishment of the production site is part of an agreement signed by the two companies in November to set up production and marketing joint ventures.

At the initial signing of the agreement, Toshiba officials said the joint venture would target the Chinese market at first and would gradually expand sales to markets in Southeast Asia and export to Japan. (Kyodo)
