Royal Philips Electronics, the Dutch electronics company, is uniting its North American domestic appliance and personal care divisions and has chosen Stamford, CT, U.S. as the new unit's North American headquarters.

Philips announced that all of its North American sales, marketing, and operational functions for the company's domestic appliances and personal care products will consolidate into the single unit.

The newly created Domestic Appliances & Personal Care North America division includes the Philips, Sonicare, Norelco, and Senseo brands.

The division will manufacture and market shavers, electric toothbrushes, women's beauty, and health-care products, as well as domestic appliances for the U.S., Canada, and Mexico.

Philips's Seattle, WA, U.S.-based oral health care division, best known for its Sonicare electric toothbrushes, will move to Stamford on April 1. About a dozen U.S. West Coast marketing and sales employees will transfer here, said Robert Baird, who will lead the new unit as president and CEO. There are currently 90 Philips employees working in the city.

Before the consolidation, Mr. Baird led the Stamford-based Norelco consumer products division and Philips domestic products group, which market shavers and other personal grooming products and small appliances such as coffeemakers, juicers, and toasters.

The consolidation stems from Philips' recent marketing campaign that emphasizes the simplicity of its products, Mr. Baird said.

The company wants to bring that same simplicity to its corporate structure. By operating as one unit, Philips can better reach and respond to customers, Mr. Baird said.

Mr. Baird said Philips is also looking to grow the unit at a fast pace. The division is actively looking to make acquisitions.

"We are on a very big growth boom," he said. "It is expansion for Stamford. We are clearly hiring more people."

Mr. Baird said the company is actively seeking more space. "That's currently under evaluation," he said about where the company is looking to add offices or relocate. "We like the Stamford market, we feel pretty good in Stamford." (Greenwich Time)
