Consumer electronics and appliance maker Matsushita Electric Industrial Co. Ltd. confirmed plans to hire 2,000 college-trained engineers in China throughout the next 3 years by April 2008 to strengthen its research and development operations for home electronics and software.
The confirmed 2,000 hires is in addition to the 450 engineers that Matsushita plans to hire this year and surpasses for the first time the 330 engineers to be employed in Japan every year.
"This is aimed at establishing a research and development center in China, part of our move to localize production there," said a company spokesperson. "The new R&D center will first play a role in developing products for the Chinese market, but in the longer term its role will include development of products for export to other countries from China," said the official.
Matsushita is in the process of greatly expanding its manufacturing operations in China, to make products both for the Chinese market and for export.
During the past 6 months, Matsushita has issued several announcements about making China its largest manufacturing base for major home appliances such refrigerators, dishwashers and air conditioners, as well as a major production base for digital devices like flat-screen TVs, DVDs, digital cameras, and cell phones.
