Washing machines, dishwashers, and other appliances must now carry water efficiency labels under new laws passed by Australia's parliament.
Introducing the bill last year, former environment minister David Kemp warned that efficient use of Australia's fresh water resources was one of the region's most important environmental and resource management challenges.
"Without secure and high-quality water resources we would be unable to sustain our regional economies or urban communities," Dr. Kemp said.
Democrat leader Lyn Allison said the new laws would give consumers the opportunity to choose fittings and appliances according to which products saved the most water.
"We can save significant amounts of water using efficient showers, toilets, and dishwashers by setting minimum standards for the majority of household appliances and fittings," she said. (AAP)
