Research Products Corp. Recalls Electronic Air Cleaners

In cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission, Research Products Corp. of Madison, WI, U.S. recalled about 67,000 Aprilaire electronic air cleaners.

Consumers were advised to stop using recalled products immediately. The air cleaner's plastic inner housing and filter are not flame-resistant. If electrical arcing occurs in the cleaner, a fire can develop, posing a risk of burn injuries and property damage. Research Products has received six reports of fires involving the recalled air cleaners. No injuries were reported.

The recall involves all Aprilaire Model 5000 electronic air cleaners that were manufactured in the U.S.. They were sold by independent HVAC dealers across the U.S. from June 2000 through December 2004 for an installed price of about U.S. $800.
