LG Electronics Inc. claims it was the top air-conditioner manufacturer in the world for the fifth year in a row last year, selling 10.1 million units of its "Whisen" air-conditioners.

Citing a report from the Fuji Economic Research Institute, the electronics manufacturer said its share of the global air-conditioner market reached 19.6 percent and was worth U.S. $2.6 billion. Total world sales of the product reached 51 million sets last year.

LG Electronics has held the top ranking since 2000 when it sold 4.1 million units. Whisen was also the largest market share in 43 countries last year.

"We plan to earn revenue of 10 trillion won (approx. U.S. $9.64 billion) from the air-conditioner sector in 2010," said Roh Hwan-yong, vice president of the appliance maker. It expects its air-conditioner sales to reach $3.3 billion this year.

LG will expand its annual production capacity of 12.9 million in 7 countries to 15 million by developing new production bases and will also increase its research and development workforce by 15 percent every year to support that goal. (Yonhap)
