Dyson Gaining U.S. Market Share

Dyson, the British-designed vacuum cleaner, has reportedly captured a 15-percent share of the U.S. upright vacuum cleaner market, as measured by value, less than 2 years after its launch in the region.

According to a report from UK newspaper telegraph.co.uk, the vacuum is now be the country's number two upright vacuum cleaner brand after Hoover, and expects the U.S. to become its largest market in 2005.

Dyson, which is famed for its "dual cyclone" bagless technology, expects to sell 900,000 machines in the U.S. this year, up by 350 percent from 200,000 last year. The best-selling line -- the DC07 -- has a starting price of U.S. $400.

"There seems to be an insatiable appetite for Dyson machines at the moment, so the possibilities are very exciting," a company spokesman said.

Expansion in North America will be helped by Allan Leighton, the serial director, who will work with Dyson as a consultant in the region for up to 3 days a month. He stepped down as a non-executive director of Dyson last month.

Dyson, which is controlled by its founder, James Dyson, made a profit in 2003 of approximately $85.9 million. (telegraph.co.uk)
