General Electric's Consumer & Industrial division reported U.S. $163 million in profits during its third quarter, a 31-percent increase over the same period in 2003.

Despite rising steel prices that have hurt earnings at other appliance makers in recent months, GE's Consumer & Industrial division based in Louisville, KY, U.S. grew profits by selling more high-end appliances and cutting costs.

Over all, GE earned U.S. $4.05 billion during the quarter, or $0.38 per share, up 11 percent. (The Courier-Journal)
