Bulgaria will soon impose an eco-tax on all electrical appliances following a request by the European Union. The new tax takes effect in 2008, and is expected to hike up the prices of stoves, television sets and computers.

The EU has also established tax requirements for recycling all electric and electronic waste in accordance with the WEEE Directive. Bulgaria will calculate the tax based on recycling costs. Citizens will be obliged to hand over old appliances and electronics to recycling services or return them to stores where they were bought.
