RadioShack, the third-largest U.S. consumer electronics retailer, said it has reached a multi-year agreement with Sprint to develop, deploy and operate Sprint-branded kiosks in approximately 500 U.S. shopping malls.
Both companies plan to complete their roll-out over the next three years, including launching 90 Sprint kiosks by spring 2005. U.S. markets will include Texas, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Virginia, Maryland, Oregon, Illinois, Georgia, Florida, Washington and California.
The announcement comes after a successful 10-month pilot program involving 10 Sprint kiosks in different malls across the U.S. RadioShack and Sprint have been working together since 1996 when the two combined to offer Sprint PCS services at RadioShack's 7,000 retail stores throughout the U.S.
According to the agreement, RadioShack will be responsible for all development, implementation, and maintenance of the kiosks and day-to-day operations. Through the kiosk program, RadioShack and Sprint are targeting a greater share of the high-end, youth, and pre-paid market through its mall locations and by including Virgin Mobile in the product line. The stores will be stocked with the full assortment of Sprint phones, including PDA and multi-media phones.
RadioShack also announced that it has created a new division called Retail Services, which leverages the company’s existing infrastructure and operation expertise in developing new business opportunities with current and future strategic partners.
“This expanded kiosk program will accelerate our Retail Services business, which will be an integral part of our growth strategy for the coming years,” Leonard Roberts said, chairman and CEO of RadioShack.
