Up to 170 production workers are expected to be laid off this month at Maytag's washer and dryer manufacturing operations in Newton, IA, U.S.

The job cuts are the first since United Auto Workers Local 997 and the company reached agreement on a new contract in July, ending a 3-week strike.

Maytag has said the new contract helped reduce production costs at the Newton plant, but costs were still too high to make the factory eligible to produce any new products.

Lynne Dragomier, a Maytag spokeswoman, said the layoffs were necessary because of lower demand for certain products produced at Newton. (
