Australia's state and federal energy ministers have agreed to implement a new national standard for rating energy efficiency.

The new system will be similar to one that currently exists on white goods but will be expanded to include other electrical items like televisions, videos, and computers.

Federal Industry Minister Ian McFarlane says the new system will give consumers certainty when they buy new appliances. "What we've done here is set a basic framework which will see uniformity across the states and bring about real opportunity in terms of energy efficiency and energy saving," he said.

The new rating system's framework was voted on during the Ministerial Council on Energy. (Australian Broadcasting Corporation News Online)
