Australian Federal Environment Minister Ian Campbell has launched a new water efficiency labeling plan for appliances. Senator Campbell says it is a world-first.

Currently, the country's households are using 16 percent of Australia's main water supply.

Senator Campbell says the new labels will allow homeowners to choose appliances, such as washing machines, based on water efficiency. He says any extra costs will be absorbed by water use savings.

"You're not just investing an extra $100 in environmentally sound and water efficient showerheads, you're going to save yourself money," he said. "Australians want to do the right thing, they need the information to do it." (Australian Broadcasting Corporation)
