Slovenian-based appliance maker Gorenje and IBM have joined forces to develop a prototype home appliance which will connect the new white goods with other home appliances using intelligent components.
According to the home appliance maker, Gorenje will be among the first to produce such intelligent goods in both Europe and throughout the world. While the prototypes of new white goods have already been manufactured, Gorenje is now getting ready for mass production, with the first new appliances expected to be available toward the end of 2004.
Based on Internet technology, the new generation of Gorenje products are, according to the companies, easy to use, simplifying every-day housework. IBM experts have worked with the R&D department of Gorenje in what is a major project of the IBM know-how transfer to the Slovenian, Velenje-based company.
A leading Slovenian exporter, Gorenje recently ranked in the top third of Slovenian companies in terms of 2003 total revenues on a list of 500 major domestic companies drafted by the business magazine Kapital.
Gorenje generated net sales revenues of EUR 144.7 million (approx. U.S. $176.2 million) in the first quarter of 2004, up 14.2 percent year-on-year, while net profit stood at EUR 3.95 million (approx. $4.8 million), up 16.3 percent from the first quarter of 2003. (Slovenia Business Week)
