Appliance maker Whirlpool Corp. (Benton Harbor, MI, U.S.) announced that it began a U.S. $100 million project to construct an office building and expand its washing machine plant in the northern Mexican state of Nuevo Leon.

Whirlpool plans to expand its washing machine plant by 3.5 times and add 500 new jobs, the company said.

Washing machines produced at the plant, to be completed by 2005, will initially be focused on export markets, Whirlpool said. (Reuters)
