Godrej to Focus on Overseas Markets

Faced with operating losses and falling market share in the domestic appliances market, the privately-held Godrej Appliances (GAL) is looking to increase its overseas market share.

With its initial international foray into Sri Lanka giving reasonable returns, the Indian appliance company is hoping to extend its global identity to other countries. GAL has identified Bangladesh, Nigeria, Tanzania, Iraq, and Dubai as potential markets for overseas forays, some of which are expected to be formalized within 6 months. GAL said it is in process of appointing distributors for the nations, according to SK Ghatak, the company's executive vice president.

GAL has sold 7,500 units of frost-free and direct-cool refrigerators and about 800 washing machines in Sri Lanka. The home appliance maker has projected a market share of 15 percent for refrigerators in its first full-year of operations. (Time of India)
