GAMA has elected Ian Stewart Farewell, executive vice president and COO of Rheem Manufacturing Company, to serve as chairman of the association for the 2004-2005 period. The announcement was made at GAMA's annual meeting, which was attended by APPLIANCE on April 19-21 in Tucson, AZ, U.S.

The association also awarded three industry veterans at the meeting. John W. Norris, Jr., chairman of the Board of Lennox International, Inc., received GAMA's Distinguished Service Award; Paul E. Beach, chief engineer, Standards for White-Rogers, Division of Emerson, received the Technical Service Award; and John D. Beckett, chairman of R.W. Beckett Corporation, Beckett Air, Inc., and Beckett Gas, Inc. received the Public Service Award.

One of the organization's biggest announcements was that it plans to open an office in Beijing, China this summer. "A poll conducted of GAMA's member-company CEOs confirmed it -- China is too important for our industries to ignore," Evan R. Gaddis, president of GAMA, said. Mr. Gaddis said that GAMA is in the process of completing arrangements with the National Electrical Manufacturers Association (NEMA). The two associations plan to share a joint office in the Beijing location, which will house an on-site GAMA representative.
