Samsung Electronics Co. said that the share of offshore production in its digital media division has exceeded 80 percent for the first time, reaching 84 percent as of the end of the first quarter.

The portion of exports in Samsung's digital media sales has also topped 80 percent, signaling a rapid globalization of South Korea's electronics industry, company officials said. The share of overseas output in the electronics giant's digital media business jumped from 70 percent in 2002 to 78 percent in 2003.

"The latest figure shows that eight out of Samsung's digital TVs, monitors, printers, camcorders, and other digital-media products are being produced by its offshore plants," a company spokesman said. "The rapid globalization of production has been made possible by an advanced logistics system."

Samsung currently operates two digital-media plants in South Korea, with 12 other plants located in China, Mexico, and eight other countries.

The offshore portion for Samsung's digital media is exceptionally higher than the 20 percent for its cell phone division and 65 percent for home appliance division. The corresponding figure for LG Electronics Inc.'s digital media division is said to be 50 percent. (Yonhap)
