Emerson Appliance Controls, the largest employer in Sparta, TN, U.S., announced plans to close its factory next year, eliminating nearly 500 jobs.

The 492 jobs will be phased out starting in a few months and will be completed in June 2005, company spokesman Dave Baldridge said. Competition forced the company to close the plant, and future work will be done at other plants in the U.S. and in Asia, he said.

Emerson officials met with employees to discuss plans to shutter the plant, which has been a fixture in Sparta since 1968. The company makes timers for appliances and operated under the name Mallory Controls before a corporate reorganization in 2000.

Employees will receive severance packages and because some of the work is moving overseas, they may also qualify for federal assistance.

Sparta, about 80 miles east of Nashville, has a population of about 4,600. (AP, Tennessean)
