NEC and Matsushita Electric separately said that they are planning to at least double their mobile phone shipments to China in financial 2004, starting in April.

NEC said it expects to raise its China-bound shipments to 2-3 million phones from the 2003 level of about 1 million.

"We have developed new high-end models specifically for the Chinese market, which will be offered by the end of March," said Emi Hidaka, a spokeswoman for NEC. New models include a thin card-type and pendant-like models equipped with digital cameras, she said. A total of 20 models will be offered by the end of March 2005.

Matsushita's cell phone arm, Panasonic Mobile Communications, also intends to boost its Chinese shipments to 4 million from 2 million at the current level, according to a spokeswoman for the company. The firm will introduce four or five new models in China by the end of this month, said to be mostly lightweight units. (Xinhua Financial News)
