Personal care appliance maker The Gillette Company (Boston, MA, U.S.) announced that it will invest 120 million euros (approx. U.S. $148 million) for the construction of a new manufacturing, packaging, and warehouse facility in Poland.

The new 80,000-sq m facility in Lodz, Poland, will be responsible for the production of disposable razors and other existing shaving systems, as well as the packaging and distribution of all Gillette blade and razor products in Europe. It is expected that the new facility will create 1,150 jobs.

The company's current blade and razor manufacturing operations in Lodz and in Isleworth, UK, along with the packaging and distribution operations at Hemel Hempstead, UK, will be consolidated into the new facility. The new manufacturing center also will handle all Sensor production currently housed at Gillette's Berlin manufacturing center.

Work on the new facility will commence this year and it is expected to be fully operational by 2007.

"The new operations in Poland will significantly reduce costs, improve our operating efficiency and streamline our European blade and razor manufacturing, packaging, and warehouse operations," said Michael T. Cowhig, president, Global Technical and Manufacturing, The Gillette Company. "Our overall goal is world-class manufacturing that can generate new product innovations, deliver the highest product quality and provide the best levels of service to our retail customers."

The decision to build the new facility in Lodz, Poland, was made following an extensive review of the company's blade and razor operations in Europe and Russia, and after a detailed study of other European countries.
