Japan TV Sales Expected to Take 80 Percent of Market Share

By 2008, sales of plasma-display panel and liquid-crystal display televisions are expected to grow to 8.4 million units in Japan, taking an 80.3-percent market share of overall television sales, according to the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association (JEITA).
JEITA also said sales of thin televisions are expected to surpass those of cathode-ray tube televisions in 2006 and will see global growth of an estimated 31.6 million units in 2008, up 8.4 percent from 2003.
In 2006, Japanese sales of plasma-display panel and LCD televisions are expected to grow 3.7 percent from 2003 to 5.5 million units, surpassing the estimated 4.1 million for cathode-day tube televisions, JEITA said. Of the 5.5 million thin television units, 4.5 million are expected to be LCD televisions that have 10-in or larger screens, while the other 1 million units are likely to be plasma-display panel televisions.
Worldwide, sales of LCD televisions are projected to rise 8.5 percent from 2003 to 23.7 million units in 2008, while plasma-display panel televisions are likely to grow 8 percent to 7.9 million units.
Sales of DVD recorders are expected to increase 10.8 percent in the next 5 years to 39 million units, JEITA said. (Kyodo, Dow Jones)
