Strong Builder Channel Drives Canadian Appliances Sales

The Canadian Appliance Manufacturers Association (CAMA) reported a great year for appliance producers. The association said a strong builder channel, up 8 percent from 2002, drove major appliance sales to 4.8 million units in 2003, a growth of 5.4 percent.

The core white goods products (refrigerators, electric ranges, automatic washers, electric dryers, and dishwashers) saw growth of 3.8 percent in 2003, with a total of 3.7 million units shipped. Performing particularly well were electric dryers, up 5.2 percent to 639,557 units and refrigerators, up 4.2 percent to 1,015,182 units.

Looking at the additional product categories, microwave ovens posted very strong results, up 11.6 percent to a total of 965,337 units. Cooktops, while still a relatively small portion of the total cooking market, also performed well, up 18 percent from 2002 to a total of 40,136 units.

CAMA reported that Energy Star modeled appliances are becoming a trend in many Canadian homes, as 37 percent of all refrigerators, 24 percent of all washers, and 49 percent of all dishwashers shipped throughout 2003 were Energy Star models. The association believes that energy-efficient products will continue to gain popularity, as more consumers realize that the appliances result in substantial energy and financial savings each month.
