Matsushita Electric Industrial announced it has decided to procure active-matrix liquid crystal display panels of 30 in and above from Sharp to cope with growing demand for flat-panel televisions, the Nihon Keizai Shimbun reported.

Matsushita will initially buy about 10,000 of the 32-in panels a month from a Sharp plant in Mie Prefecture due to come in January, it said, adding that the volume and variety of components will eventually be increased.

The selection of Sharp as an additional supplier is, according to the report, designed to reduce Matsushita Electric's reliance on Samsung and increase its leverage against price hikes.
