Southern LINC and Motorola Introduce New Handset

Southern LINCĀ® (Plantation, FL, U.S.), the wireless communications service from Southern Company, and Motorola, Inc. (Schaumburg, IL, U.S.), has announced the release of the new Motorola i530 handset, a flip-style phone. The handset will be available for purchase through Southern LINC in early January. The GPS technology-enabled handset is the first "ruggedized, flip-style handset" offered by Southern LINC, according to Southern LINC.

Gemstar-TV Guide and Sony Corporation Sign Multi-Year IPG License Agreement

Los Angeles, CA, U.S.-based Gemstar-TV Guide International and Japan-based Sony Corporation have signed a multi-year licensing agreement allowing Sony to incorporate Gemstar-TV Guide's interactive program guide (IPG) for the consumer electronics arena into certain Sony digital products in Japan. Under the agreement, the licensed products include digital recording devices and televisions. Gemstar is a media and technology company that develops, licenses, markets and distributes technologies, products and services targeted at the television guidance and home entertainment needs of consumers.

Gemstar-TV Guide's IPG for consumer electronics is marketed as G-Guide in Japan. Sony has previously incorporated G-Guide into several products in Japan, including the world's first Blu-ray Disc recorder, Sony's BDZ-S77. Under the new agreement with Gemstar-TV Guide, Sony plans to expand its incorporation of G-Guide into PSX, a new-generation HDD+DVD recorder.
