Japan's domestic shipments of mobile phones, including personal handy-phone system (PHS) equipment, grew 30.2 percent in October from a year earlier to 4.11 million units, up for the 12th consecutive month.
It was the eighth straight month in which mobile phone and PHS shipments surpassed 4 million, the Japan Electronics and Information Technology Industries Association reported.
Excluding PHS handsets, shipments of mobile phones rose 30.6 percent to 4 million units, rising for the 13th straight month.
The increase reflects strong demand for camera-equipped mobile phones and steady growth in sales of third-generation mobile handsets as service areas expand and prices decline, the research group said. (The Japan Times)
