Honeywell Inc. (Phoenix, AZ, U.S.) has announced it has granted LG. Philips LCD (Morris Township, NJ, U.S.) rights under three Honeywell U.S. patents relating to liquid crystal displays (LCDs) found in a wide variety of electronic consumer and business products.
Honeywell is a $22 billion technology and manufacturing company that serves customers with aerospace products and services; control technologies for buildings, homes and industry; automotive products; turbochargers; specialty chemicals; fibers; and electronic and advanced materials. LG. Philips LCD is a provider of integrated avionics, engines, systems and service solutions for aircraft manufacturers, airlines, business and general aviation, military, space, and airport operations, which includes being a provider of LCD display products.
Financial terms of the agreement were not disclosed.
The patented technologies are said to brighten displays while conserving power, reduce screen flicker, and drive the grayscale of the pixels, or dots, that form the images displayed on the screen. The technologies are widely used in LCD applications, including desktop PC monitors, notebook computers, televisions, personal digital assistants (PDAs), mobile phones, and other applications.
"These agreements enable LG.Philips LCD and Honeywell to benefit from years of pioneering research by Honeywell's aerospace business on LCD technology for aircraft cockpit displays," said Michael Ward, Honeywell vice president of Licensing, in a written statement.
Now that Honeywell has granted LG. Philips LCD these patent rights, L.G. Philips has joined a growing number of LCD makers such as NEC, Toshiba, and Winbond who have also obtained rights to use Honeywell LCD patents.
Under the agreements, LG. Philips LCD is permitted to use certain patented Honeywell LCD technologies worldwide. These technologies are covered by U.S. patent Nos. 5,061,920, 5,041,823 and 5,280,371 and foreign counterparts.
