South Korean appliance maker LG Electronics Inc. has the top market share in China's digital television market, according to the Chinese market research firm Information Center Data (ICD).

The firm reported that LG Electronics posted the top share of 16 percent in China's digital TV market for the first 9 months of this year.

LG ranked second last year with a share of 18 percent, but ascended to the top post this year on the back of strong sales of its projection TVs, which account for 87 percent of China's entire digital TV market, ICD said.

Samsung Electronics Co. came in second with a market share of 12.8 percent by the end of the third quarter.

By segment, LG lead the market position in sales of projection TVs for the sixth consecutive month since April, with its market share averaging 17.5 percent as of the end of September, compared with runner-up Toshiba's 12.5 percent.

In sales of plasma display panel (PDP) and liquid crystal display (LCD) TVs, LG ranked second with market shares of 19 percent and 19.2 percent, respectively, in the first 9 months. In both projection and LCD TVs, LG recorded a one-notch rise in its ranking.

China's digital TV market is expected to grow 45 percent from 690,000 units last year to about 1 million units this year. (Yonhap)
