The Gas Appliance Manufacturers Association (GAMA) released its third-quarter statistical reports for its Hydronics Institutes Division. According to the report, cast-iron boiler shipments were up 11.4 percent to 238,878 in the third quarter of this year, which ended Sept. 30, 2003. This is up from the same period last year, which posted 214,406 shipments.
Gas-fired, cast-iron boilers saw the biggest change, with an increase of 27.6 percent to 25,349 in the third quarter of this year compared to 19,868 during the third quarter of 2002.
Gas-fired, cast-iron water boiler shipments increased 8.3 percent to 119,880 from 110,703 during the third quarter of 2002. Oil-fired, cast-iron steam boilers increased 16.3 percent to 12,662 in this year's third quarter, up from 10,884 in the third quarter of 2002.
The breakdown for cast-iron boiler shipments for the third quarter of 2003, ending Sept. 30, are as follows:
Gas-fired, Steam: under 250,000 BTU output was up 23,249 in 2003, compared to 16,135 in 2002. However, according to the GAMA, a change comparison is not appropriate because in 2002, the 200,000 to 249,000 BTU category was combined with the 250,000 to 449,000 BTU category for the monthly cast-iron boiler shipments report.
Gas-fired, Steam: 250,000 BTU output and more than 250,000 BTU output was down in 2003 to 2,100 shipments from 3,733 shipments during the third quarter in 2002. A comparison is also not appropriate for these statistics, according to GAMA, for the same reason stated for the under 250,000 BTU category.
Gas-fired, Water: under 250,000 BTU output was 105,393 in 2002, and is up 9.2 percent in 2003 to 115,133.
Gas-fired, Water: 250,000 BTU output and more than 250,000 BTU output was down in 2003 at 4,747 shipments from 5,310 shipments during the third quarter in 2002, a loss of 10.6 percent.
Oil-fired, Steam: under 250,000 BTU output was 11,001 in 2003, a 23.9-percent increase from 8,876 in 2002.
Oil-fired, Steam: 250,000 BTU output and more than 250,000 BTU output was down 17.3 percent to 1,661 in 2003, compared to 2,008 during the third quarter of 2002.
Oil-fired, Water: under 250,000 BTU output was up 10 percent in the third quarter to 76,299 from 69,368 the same period in 2002.
Oil-fired, Water: 250,000 BTU output and more than 250,000 BTU output was 80,987, up 30.8 percent from the 72,951 posted for the same period last year.
GAMA also released its steel boiler and radiation shipments for the third quarter of 2003. Steel boiler shipments for oil and bare units were up 5.8 percent to 12,565 in 2003 from 11,874 shipments in 2002.
The association’s radiation shipments were also up. No numbers were provided for convectors, but its baseboard shipments (in linear feet) increased 10.9 percent from 8.2 million in 2002 to 9.1 million in 2003. Finned tube (in linear feet) shipments were up 2.3 percent to 804,279 this year from 786,370 shipments in 2002.
