Italian appliance maker Merloni Elettrodomestici announced a project to open a new washing machine plant in Russia and a new refrigerator plant in Poland, and to double the capacity of the company's cooker plant already operating in Lodz, in Poland. The project will cost E100 million over 3 years.
According to the company, the new production facilities will meet its need for a more even balance between output levels in Eastern and Western Europe. Approximately 86 percent of the company's total production is provided by its plants in Western Europe, a region that only delivers 67 percent of the company's sales. In addition, Merloni says that while Western European markets are showing growth of slightly more than 2 percent, Eastern European markets are enjoying double-digit growth rates.
