Thomas Associates has resigned as manager of the Vacuum Cleaner Manufacturers Association, effective Dec. 31.

"You can't have two groups representing one industry. We felt it is in the best interest of Thomas Associates to remove ourselves," said Chuck Stockinger, Thomas' president, referring to the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers' creation of a Floor Care Division in January.

Eureka and Bissell, among others, have left VCMA. AHAM said it has enrolled about 16 companies, including all the industry leaders. VCMA was founded in 1913 and run by members until Thomas was retained two years ago. Stockinger said Thomas would consider performing functions temporarily after Jan. 1.
