Frigidaire Celebrates 85 Years in New York

APPLIANCE magazine and several other industry partners traveled to New York City, NY, U.S. on Thursday to celebrate the 85th birthday of Frigidaire.

Key executives from Electrolux Home Products attended the celebration to honor the backbone of the Frigidaire brand—the refrigerator. "For tasty leftovers everywhere, if nothing else, today we celebrate," quipped Keith R. McLoughlin, president and CEO of Electrolux Home Products North America.

The event, held at The Plaza Hotel, took visitors back in time through an extensive exhibit of the evolution of Frigidaire refrigerators. Frigidaire was born in 1918, after General Motors president W.C. Durant purchased the Guardian Refrigerator Company, the developer of the very first self-contained electric household refrigerator. Through financing and support from GM, the company has grown into the diversified appliance producer it is today.

Actors within the exhibit depicted the appliances of the time: A 1920s stay-at-home mom talked about how much her new wooden Frigidaire refrigerator (pictured) has changed her life; Alice and Ralph showed off the new “sheer” design of the 1950s; a single bachelor highlighted the in-door ice dispenser featured in his 1970s avocado-green refrigerator; and the stay-at-home dad of today bragged about the convenience of his new Gallery series refrigerator.

The day event ended with Mr. McLoughlin cutting the birthday cake.

During an evening reception, Electrolux honored 30 of its longest-standing dealer partnerships. Among those honored were Adamcik’s, Inc. of La Grange, TX, U.S., who has been a Frigidaire dealer for 81 years, and Ed Ebersole of Ebersole’s Appliance Service in Elizabethtown, PA, U.S., who has been servicing Frigidaire products for 58 years.

According to Tony Evans, corporate communications executive, the purpose of the day-long event was to celebrate "the DNA" of the Frigidaire brand and how far it has come over the last 85 years. "But," he adds, "it still stands for the same things it did years ago - making life easier, making life more enjoyable, and innovating to change the way we live."
