Dell Computer Corp. is likely to show at least 35-percent sales growth as well as a jump in earnings when it reports on its quarter soon, as it sold more personal computers than any competitor and broke into the printer market.
The company, which earlier this month asked shareholders to approve dropping "Computer" from its name to reflect its expansion beyond PCs, will give details of how price cuts allowed it to steal customers from competitors such as Hewlett-Packard Co., International Business Machines Corp., and Gateway Inc. Dell has also gained market share in new areas, such as data storage and computer printers. It sells Dell-branded data storage systems and in March began selling Dell printers in a direct challenge to HP. (Reuters)
