Japan's Sanyo Electric Co Ltd said it planned to enter the European cellphone handset market as early as next year, in a move to take its expertise in third-generation (3G) phones overseas.
However, Sanyo, Japan's third-largest consumer electronics maker, declined to comment on a Financial Times report that Britain's Vodafone Group Plc was in exclusive talks with Sanyo and South Korea's Samsung Electronics Co Ltd for 3G phones.
"It is true we are considering going into the European 3G market. But we cannot comment on which carriers we are going to team up with," said a spokesman at Sanyo, which already supplies J-Phone, the Japanese wireless unit of Vodafone, with 3G phones.
Vodafone is expected to launch a 3G service in Europe by the end of the year. (Reuters)
