HOMEWORLD BUSINESS®, with the educational support of the International Housewares Association, has launched the Housewares Design Awards.

The inaugural housewares design competition will culminate at a special luncheon and awards presentation, Jan. 13, 2004, at the landmark Haier Building in New York, NY, U.S.

With the aim of showcasing housewares design originality that enhances product value and positively impacts consumers, the design competition will identify finalists and "Best in Category" honorees in eight categories:

• Kitchen Electrics;

• Household Electrics (garment care, personal care, health care, home environment, floor care);

• Cookware & Bakeware;

• Kitchenware & Cutlery;

• Tabletop (dinnerware, beverageware, flatware, serving accessories);

• Home Organization, Laundry Care & Non-Electric Cleaning Tools;

• Furniture (RTA furniture, accent furniture); and

• Lighting & Decorative Accessories (frames, wall art, mirrors).

The awards program also will feature a special section that recognizes retailers that have excelled in displaying each of the eight general categories.

The IHA will coordinate the product design judging with a multi-disciplinary jury including designers and retail merchandisers. Products will be judged on aesthetics; innovation in materials, marketing and technology; and user benefits.

Products eligible for this year’s design competition should have been introduced to the marketplace between Oct. 1, 2002 and Sept. 30, 2003; and they should be available for sale in the U.S. by Oct. 1, 2003. Deadline for entries is Oct. 28, 2003.

Judges will select five finalists and "Best in Category" honorees in each of the eight categories. Finalists will be notified by IHA, and "Best in Category" selections will be revealed and presented during the awards luncheon in January.

Finalists also will be featured in a special HomeWorld Business publication to be distributed during the awards luncheon.

Companies may enter as many finished products in as many categories as they choose. There is a $100 entry fee per submission. Judging will include examination of actual products (some exceptions may apply based on weight and size). Prototypes will not be accepted.
