DoCoMo to Replace Camera-Equipped Phones On Demand

NTT DoCoMo Inc. will replace units of its first camera-equipped mobile phone when users report problems concerning voice transmission, a company spokesman said on Monday.
Since around August, the Japanese mobile phone giant has received complaints from its SH251i model users who are reporting problems with voice transmission or heard strange noises when using the phones.
So far, DoCoMo has replaced about 65,000 units of the model supplied by Sharp Corp., though it hasn't received complaints about units it shipped after November.
DoCoMo says it has hasn't made the problem public and currently has no plan to do so, as "this is not a structural problem in the product," according to the spokesman. The problems appear to be due to errors made by plant workers during the assembly process, he added.
Last October, DoCoMo informed local units and retail agents of the problem, and since then customer complaints have increased, the spokesman said.
DoCoMo started the "i-shot" service last June using Sharp handsets, which enable mobile phone users to take pictures and send them by e-mail. Earlier this month, DoCoMo said the number of mobile phone handsets capable of the "i-shot" photo service had reached more than 5 million units. (Dow Jones)
